Hunter Central Coast - Boys in Performing Arts Program

The 2009 Program will be held on February 26, 27. The cost of the two day program is $60

The purpose of the two day workshops to provide opportunities for boys with talents or interests in the performing arts and performing arts related areas. The program attempts to break down some of the barriers that traditionally exist for boys who might otherwise pursue an interest in the performing arts.

The program is aimed at boys in the middle school years of 5 - 8. The workshops are student focused and embrace the principles of quality teaching. The program endeavours to improve student engagement in the middle years by providing learning that responds to student individual aspirations and talents.

The program utilises school staff with special expertise in the areas of Dance, Drama, Music and Theatre Technology (sound, lighting and film and digital media). The staff conducting the workshops have vast experience in Starstruck, State Dance, Schools Spectacular, Regional Drama Camps and vocational training in the Entertainment Industry course.

Male students from the school support the participants through the program. All performing arts workshops are highly physical in their structure and include hip hop dance, rhythm and percussion, stage fighting and Commedia del arte. The boys in the technology workshops will have access to a facility with state of the art lighting, sound and digital media equipment. These are facilities that are not available in other school settings.

Selection for participation in the course is based on recommendation by the local Principals who are asked to identify boys who have a strong interest in the performing arts and whose talents would benefit from a more intense exposure to the type of learning that can take place through the performing arts. It is strongly suited to boys who can work well in a team environment. It is not aimed at boys who already have a high level of participation in performing arts activities such as Starstruck.

The ongoing viability of the program is determined by feedback from course participants each year and the take up of places in the course which has grown in numbers each year, and the availability of expert staff. Minor changes to the program have been made by the workshop presenters following feedback from the students and their Principals. Each participating school was presented with a copy of a DVD highlighting the achievements of the program.
